What is Kappa Alpha Pi?

Kappa Alpha Pi is the premier co-ed pre-law fraternity, and UCLA’s oldest pre-law fraternity. We seek to provide our members with guidance in regards to the law school application process, law school, and the legal profession, while also encouraging them to build strong, lifelong relationships with each other and the greater UCLA community. Our fraternity is founded upon three pillars: Philanthropy, Professionalism, and Brotherhood.

Why rush Kappa Alpha Pi?

One of Kappa Alpha Pi’s adages is, “Come for the professionalism, stay for the brotherhood.” We offer an array of professional development opportunities, such as LSAT prep; resume, cover letter, and interview help; and financial literacy workshops. Day-to-day, we inspire each other, provide each other with resources, and build each other’s networks.

At the same time, we also strive to cultivate a family at UCLA for our brothers. We have countless activities throughout the year, including intramural sports, beach days, retreats, community service events, and little things in between, to build quality relationships among our members. There are no strangers in the Kappa Alpha Pi fraternity.

We want all of our brothers to realize their full potential, in more ways than one, during their time at UCLA.

Do I need to be 100% pre-law, or a Political Science major to rush?

Not at all. We currently have members majoring in Economics, Environmental Science, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Geography, Public Affairs, Microbiology, International Development Studies, Physics, and much more. Furthermore, many of our brothers join Kappa Alpha Pi as a tentative pre-law student, but go on to study or work in completely different, non-legal fields, such as consulting, education, or tech! The legal experience you receive during your time in Kappa Alpha Pi will help you decide whether a career in law is for you; the professional skills you develop over the course of your time in the fraternity will be invaluable regardless.

Can I be a member of another organization and still join?

Yes! If anything, the more involved our members are, the greater the quality of the fraternity. You are even able to be a member of a social fraternity/sorority in addition to a professional fraternity such as Kappa Alpha Pi. However, in order to join Kappa Alpha Pi, you cannot be a member of another professional fraternity (a fraternity under the Professional Fraternity Council).

Can I rush as a senior, transfer, or re-entry student?

Of course! Many of our current members did. Regardless of how much time you have left at UCLA, you get out of Kappa Alpha Pi what you put into it.

What is rush?

Kappa Alpha Pi’s rush is a week-long process that takes place at the beginning of Fall (Week 1) and Spring (Week 2) Quarter. The first three nights of rush are largely informational, each night showcasing one of our pillars, and are open to everyone. Though attendance at only one night of open rush is the prerequisite for applying to become a member, we encourage everyone to attend as many as they can. Upon the conclusion of open rush, a select group of applicants will be invited back for a coffee chat with the brothers, which is more casual, and from there may be offered an interview, which models a more professional setting. Lastly, Kappa Alpha Pi will offer a bid to candidates we feel will provide a significant contribution to our fraternity.

What does Kappa Alpha Pi look for in a rushee?

There is no strict set of criteria; no rushee is the same. What we care about is finding someone that we envision will not only grow from our fraternity, but also contribute to the fraternity’s growth. Therefore, our ideal rushee is passionate, disciplined, and open-minded—not only intelligent, but also willing to learn.

What can I do during rush to give me the best chance of receiving a bid?

First and foremost, make the effort to attend as many nights of rush as possible. This allows you to not only meet more brothers, but establish the best quality impression of yourself that you can. The more you show your face, the more memorable you become. Most importantly, be yourself! We want to see how your true personality meshes with our members and whether your interests match what the fraternity would offer you. Lastly, be respectful of not only us but your fellow rushees; that includes being punctual (unless you have a prior commitment).

What is a bid?

A bid is an invitation to participate in the process of becoming a member of Kappa Alpha Pi. Rejecting a bid significantly decreases your chances of receiving one again should you rush in the future.

If I don’t receive a bid, can I rush again?

Yes! It is often the case that there are more qualified candidates than we can extend bids to. Rushing again might help demonstrate a high level of interest and commitment that we didn’t see the first time around, which may boost your chance to receive a bid.

Does Kappa Alpha Pi haze?

No. Kappa Alpha Pi abides by UCLA’s strict no-hazing policy.
